Is It OK to Use AI in Job Interviews? What to Check First

AI tools are now part of how many people work, write, and code. It is natural to wonder whether they belong in job interviews too. The honest answer: it depends on the employer and the interview, and you should always check.

Rules differ by company

There is no single rule for every interview:

  • Some employers allow AI and even expect candidates to use the same tools they would use on the job.
  • Some employers ban it in live interviews or coding tests, and say so in the invitation or the platform’s terms.
  • Many say nothing at all, which leaves it unclear.

How to check the rules

  1. Read the interview invitation and any candidate guide the recruiter sends.
  2. Read the coding platform’s instructions before an online assessment. They often state what is allowed.
  3. Ask the recruiter if it is unclear. A simple question like “Are AI tools allowed during the technical round?” is reasonable and professional.

If the answer is no, respect it.

Where AI help is clearly fine

Even when live help is not allowed, AI is a great preparation tool:

  • Mock interviews: practice answering common questions out loud and get feedback on your structure.
  • Story preparation: turn your experience into clear STAR answers. Our STAR method guide shows how.
  • Coding practice: understand patterns, edge cases, and complexity while you study. See our coding interview plan.
  • Company research: summarize the company’s products and recent news before the call.

Our position at InterviewStorm

We built InterviewStorm for practice, preparation, and conversations where AI assistance is permitted. That is why:

  • Our terms of service ask every user to follow the rules of each interview.
  • Employers can ask us to block InterviewStorm for their hiring process. Email compliance@interviewstorm.com with your company domain, and we will act on it.
  • We never record your screen or use your data to train AI models. Read our privacy policy.

The best long-term strategy

AI can help you think clearly under pressure, but the job will still need your skills. The candidates who do best use AI to prepare deeply, understand the material, and then show up as themselves. If an answer helps you, make sure you understand it well enough to explain it and build on it in the follow-up questions.
