The Apple Interview Process: How It Works and How to Prepare

I worked at Apple, and I went through its hiring process as a candidate. The biggest difference from many other big tech companies is simple: at Apple, you usually interview for a specific team, not for the company in general. That changes how you should prepare.

Hiring is team-driven

At many companies, you pass a general interview loop and then get matched to a team. At Apple, the team that has the opening usually runs the process. This means:

  • The questions depend heavily on the team. An iOS framework team, a silicon team, and a services team will ask very different things.
  • Deep knowledge of your area matters. Expect questions about the specific technologies the team uses.
  • The hiring manager plays a big role in the final decision.

The usual stages

  1. Recruiter conversation about your background and the role.
  2. One or more phone or video screens, often with the hiring manager and an engineer from the team.
  3. The interview day, with several interviews with members of the team and related teams. Expect coding, deep technical questions in your domain, and questions about your past projects.
  4. Decision, usually led by the hiring manager.

The number of interviews and the format vary a lot from team to team.

How to prepare

Study the team, not just the company

Read the job description closely and list every technology it names. Make sure you can talk about each one in depth, with examples from your own work.

Be ready to go deep on your past projects

Apple interviewers often ask detailed questions about things you built: why you made each decision, what went wrong, and what you would do differently. Pick two or three projects and prepare to explain them at any level of detail.

Practice coding fundamentals

Even domain-heavy interviews usually include coding. Review data structures, algorithms, and clean code. Our coding interview plan gives you a routine.

Prepare a real answer to “Why Apple?”

Generic praise does not work. Connect your answer to the products, the team’s work, and what you personally care about, such as privacy, design quality, or building hardware and software together.

Show attention to detail

Apple cares a lot about quality. In coding and design questions, mention edge cases, testing, performance, and the user experience.

Tips from my own experience

  • Ask your recruiter what to expect. Since every team is different, the recruiter is your best source for the format.
  • Respect confidentiality. You may not get many details about unreleased work. That is normal.
  • Prepare behavioral stories too. Collaboration and handling disagreement come up often. Use the STAR method.
