How to use the STAR method

STAR is a simple way to answer behavioral questions, the ones that start with "Tell me about a time". You tell one short, true story in four parts:

    • Situation: one or two sentences of background. Where were you, and what was going on?
    • Task: what you had to do, or the goal you owned.
    • Action: the steps you took. This is the biggest part. Say "I", not "we".
    • Result: what changed because of you. Use a number when you can, and say what you learned.

How long should a STAR answer be?

Aim for 1.5 to 2 minutes when you say it out loud, about 200 to 280 words. Keep the Situation short and spend most of the time on your Action and Result.

    Build a small story bank

Write 5 to 6 stories before your interview: a challenge, a conflict, a mistake, a win, leadership, and learning something fast. One good story can answer several different questions. See our full guide to STAR method behavioral interview questions.
