How to answer "Tell me about yourself"
This is usually the first question, and it sets the tone for the whole interview. The interviewer does not want your life story. They want a short summary of why you fit this job. The easiest structure is present, past, future:
- Present: your current role and what you work on, plus one result with a number.
- Past: the one or two steps that led you here, such as your studies or a previous job.
- Future: why you want this role at this company.
How long should it be?
About 60 to 90 seconds, or 150 to 220 words. Practice it out loud a few times so it sounds natural, not memorized.
