I started InterviewStorm after watching wave after wave of layoffs hit talented people around me. Many of them had families, mortgages, and bills, and no time to waste. If you are in that position right now, this plan is for you.
It is built around one goal: getting you into real interviews as fast as possible, and ready to pass them.
Days 1 to 3: Take care of the basics
- Take a breath. Being laid off is common, and it says more about company decisions than about you.
- Understand your package: last paycheck, severance, health insurance, unused vacation, and any equity deadlines.
- Check your options for unemployment benefits or any support available where you live.
- Make a simple budget so you know how many months you have and can make calm decisions.
Days 4 to 7: Get your story ready
- Update your resume. Put your most recent results at the top, with numbers. Remove old details that do not help for the roles you want.
- Update LinkedIn. Match your headline to the role you want next, and turn on “Open to work” if you are comfortable with it.
- Write a short layoff line you can use in emails and interviews, for example: “My role was eliminated in a company-wide restructuring.” Then move on to your strengths.
- Prepare your opening answer. See how to answer “Tell me about yourself”.
Days 8 to 14: Apply smart, not just more
- Pick a clear target: two or three job titles and the kind of company you want.
- Use your network first. Message former colleagues and managers. Referrals often move much faster than cold applications.
- Apply to a focused list every day, and tailor the top of your resume to each role.
- Track everything in a simple spreadsheet: company, role, date, contact, next step.
Days 15 to 30: Prepare like interviews are already booked
Interviews often come in clusters. Prepare before they arrive:
- Behavioral stories: prepare five strong ones with the STAR method.
- Technical practice: for engineering roles, follow a daily routine from our coding interview plan and review system design.
- Big tech targets: read our guides on Google, Microsoft, and Apple interviews.
- Mock interviews: practice out loud, with a friend or a tool.
- Video setup: test your camera, audio, and screen sharing. Use our video interview checklist.
Protect your energy
A job search is a marathon, even when you need to move fast. Keep a daily routine, exercise, and talk to people you trust. Rejections are part of the process for everyone.
